about
The new single ‘Spin' is a 3 minute slice of jangly, distorted power pop sprinkled with squeals of feedback, all recorded live with minimal overdubs to capture the band’s energy.
Lyrically the song balances the fragility and exhaustion of everyday life with an ambivalent optimism in the chorus "While we spin around the sun, might as well try have some fun”.
Simon Morley (who sings and plays guitar on this track) says "This is one of my favourite songs to play live, I think the middle 8 is the closest we've come to being a “rock” band. It also might be one of our only songs with an overtly positive message too, so that’s nice!”.
‘Spin’ is the follow up to previous singles ‘Feeling’ (“a total riot” Loud & Quiet), 'Night Night (whatever)’ (“A thrill… Glorious in its unfettered, rule-breaking thrash… Relentlessly upbeat and endearingly catchy” Clash) and ‘OK’ (“a bounding and ebullient, but remarkably controlled ball of fuzzy brilliance” Dots and Dashes).
Having previously featured on a split 12” w/ Car Seat Headrest (Luau Records, UK), along with the 'Wicketkeeper EP' Cassette (Reefers Records, US), this is the latest single from their recent, more assured recording sessions.
Having previously played shows with Cloud Nothings, Squid, Spielbergs and Japanese Breakfast, they play Big Scary Monsters’ ‘Big Day Out’ on Saturday 28th Sept in Hackney at Paper Dress Vintage.
Wicketkeeper are: Alex Morley (Bass, Drums, Guitar) Ryan Oxley (Bass, Guitar), Simon Morley (Vocals, Drums, Guitar)
lyrics
A grey sky over London
Dark rings round my eyes
All this must mean something
Only first place gets the prize
I’m suddenly allergic
To every day life
Front seat on the top deck
And watch the world go by
While we spin around the sun
Might as well try have some fun
There’s danger in the darkness
And darkness feeds the fear
Im tired of writing words for
Songs you’ll never hear
Im constantly aware of
The things that I don’t know
I’m done with being angry
But I still love you though
While we spin around the sun
Might as well try have some fun
I tired my best to fly
but I can hardly tell the time
It’s different here than it is there
I’ll try my best I’ll try to care
I’ll care for you if you care for me
I love something I cannot see
I'm old and I regret a lot
I’m confused by a lot of things you say

Instrument-swapping London/Margate trio Wicketkeeper create a loose, breezy jangle-rock that’s been likened to Ultimate
Painting and Teenage Fanclub.
They followed a split 12” with Car Seat Headrest with their debut album ‘Shonk’ (2020).
‘Zambroni’ (2023) was self-recorded at home, which enabled the band to explore multi-track recording for the first time....more
